IDML is designed for use in InDesign, InCopy, InDesign Server, and other Adobe applications. The most common uses for INDD files are publishing flyers, newspapers and other business layouts. The elements included in the InDesign file extension are layouts, page data and other files. The InDesign file extension (INDD) is a file type for the software Adobe InDesign. The IDML file format is intended for use within the InDesign family of applications. It is the interchange format for Adobe InDesign CS4 documents. IDML stands for Adobe InDesign Markup Language, and it is an XML representation of an InDesign document or components. (The IDML format replaces the Interchange INX format used for saving backwards in previous versions.) To open an InDesign CS6 document in InDesign CS5, in InDesign CS6, Save (File > Save) the document to the InDesign Markup Language (IDML).
